ABSTRACT
The World Health Organization ranks stress as the fourth leading cause of illness worldwide. When stressed, the body secretes cortisol, which activates the sympathetic nervous system and causes sleep disturbances. Psychological disorders can also cause a decline in sleep quality. Objective: To determine the relationship between stress levels and sleep quality among nurses. Method: This study employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional method using the PSQI questionnaire. A total of 15 respondents were sampled and analyzed using SPSS 25.0 with descriptive statistics. The results showed that most nurses had poor sleep quality, with a percentage of 46.66%, moderate sleep quality in 4 nurses (26.66%), mild sleep quality in 2 nurses (13.33%), and 2 nurses (13.33%) had normal sleep quality. Stress was associated with sleep quality in nurses. Conclusion: Most surgical ward nurses at X Regional General Hospital have poor sleep quality.
